India Population Census 2027
16th National Census · A Historic Counting of 1.47 Billion
India is preparing for its 16th National Population Census — one of the largest demographic exercises in human history. Originally scheduled for 2021, the census was repeatedly delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, logistical challenges, and general elections. It is now confirmed to begin in 2026–27, bringing long-awaited, updated data on 1.47 billion people.
This census carries extraordinary significance. It will be the first to include caste enumeration since 1931, the first to be conducted digitally using mobile apps and a self-enumeration portal, and the first since India overtook China as the world's most populous nation.

✨ What Makes This Census Historic?
- Caste Census since 1931: Caste data will be collected for the first time in 96 years, impacting reservations, welfare, and political representation.
- Fully Digital: Enumerators will use smartphones; citizens can self-enumerate via a dedicated portal — making India one of very few nations to go paperless.
- Post-NPR Linkage: Linked to the National Population Register (NPR) for a comprehensive citizen database.
- Post-China Milestone: First census since India became the world's most populous nation (2023).
- Delimitation Basis: Results will be used to redraw Lok Sabha constituencies for the 2029 general election — constituencies frozen since 1976.
🔍 Why Does the Census Matter?
India's census is not just a headcount — it is the backbone of governance. Every major welfare scheme, from food distribution under the Public Distribution System (PDS) to MGNREGA employment, relies on accurate population data. With the last census conducted in 2011, India has been running on 14-year-old figures, meaning millions of eligible citizens may be excluded from benefits.
- Allocation under National Food Security Act (NFSA) / PDS
- Budget devolution to states by the Finance Commission
- Determining SC/ST reservation quotas
- Delimitation of Lok Sabha and State Assembly constituencies
- Planning for schools, hospitals, water supply, and housing
- Literacy, urbanisation, and fertility rate benchmarks

🗂️ The Caste Census — A Political Milestone
The inclusion of caste enumeration in Census 2027 is politically and socially significant. Caste data was last collected in 1931 under British rule. After independence, the Constitution abolished untouchability and mandated reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), but detailed Other Backward Class (OBC) population data has never been officially collected at the national level.
States like Bihar conducted their own caste surveys in 2023, revealing OBC populations of over 63% — data that fuelled demands for increased reservations. The CCPA's April 2025 decision to include caste in Census 2027 was a landmark political move.
